Once you made up your mind about the technology that suits your needs best (see choosing the best air purifier: step one and step two), you go shopping knowing exactly what device to look for: air ionizer, ozone generator, HEPA filter or activated carbon filter. But still, bear in mind that the best device is the one combining several technologies in one, it is the only way to protect yourself from all types of airborne pollutants: dust, allergens, odors, smoke, chemicals, gases, viruses, etc.
But what are other main features you should pay attention to when choosing an air purifier for your home or office?
Area coverage. Decide where you want to clean your air: is it entire house, a single room, a car, or any other space? Thus, choose between a whole house purifying system, a room or a portable device. Besides, the capacity of the device should correspond to the size of the space you are planning to use it in. The capacity can be greater, but shouldn't be less than the actual size of the room. Besides, if you have open room layout, high ceiling, strong room airflow, extra contaminants in the room, you should consider a device with higher capacity than your actual room space.
Power efficiency. Air purifier is a device that is supposed to be on most of the time, and if it's wasting lots of electricity, you won't be so happy with your new cleaner home once you see your bills.
Cost of replacement materials. Some devices use filters that need to be replaced after a certain period of time. Find out the price of filters, UV lamps, and other replacement details you might need when using the device, and consider this money when choosing your purifier. Sometimes a cheaper device becomes very expensive to use.
Noise level. Most air purifiers use a fan to circulate the air through the filter. And quite often fans cause considerable noise, which can be not too noticeable, but cause discomfort, sleeping and nervous disorders when used continuously.
