By Rachna Manchanda

Understanding The Advantages of Futures Options

By David Rivera

Over the last decade, the popularity of options has grown significantly. According to the data compiled by the Options Industry Council, the volume of options contracts traded on U.S. exchanges in 1999 was approximately 507 million. By 2007, that number grew to more than three billion, thus setting an all-time record.

Though futures options are quite risky investments that can only be understood by expert traders options can be very useful to the individual investor as well.

Futures Options can also add value to your portfolio and have several other advantages that are definitely worth noting. A few are outlined below and will help illustrate reasons why options have gained so much popularity in such a relatively short period of time.

The first advantage of options on futures is that they can provide increased cost efficiency. Since they possess great leveraging power, you the investor can obtain a great option position that nearly mimic a stock position but save you unnecessary cost.

The second advantage is that they provide less risk when used correctly. While there are situations where buying options is actually riskier than owning equity, but they can also be used to reduce the amount of risk incurred. Futures options can be less risky because they require less financial commitment than equities. They are also the most dependable form of hedge which makes them safer than stocks.

The third advantage of futures options is they provide higher potential for returns. This means you can spend a lot less and make nearly the same profit as you would with the underlying futures. This gives you a higher percentage return.

The fourth and final advantage discuss in this article pertains to the strategic alternatives futures options provide. Options are a very flexible tool and provide many ways to recreate other positions. These positions are known as synthetics. Synthetic positions provide you the investor multiple methods of attaining the same investment goals which can prove extremely useful.

The four points outlined above are the key advantages futures options offer and are a contributing factor to their growing popularity. If used correctly, they present less risk than straight futures and can actually save you unnecessary costs while providing you the same profit. This is important to consider when selecting a type of investment. You want to get the most out of your money and futures options provide several ways of making this happen. Take the time to review this information before ever making a buying decision. Make sure you understand how you will benefit from the decision you make and what it will mean for you in monetary terms.

Before you decide on a particular investment, consider the key advantages and weigh the risks of each possibility against what you are willing to lose. Be sure you understand how to correctly utilize futures options in order to get the most out of them. You are investing for your future so think wisely and choose carefully. The more you know, the closer you'll be to a more secure and prosperous future.

Ceramic Yarn - Clay's Journey From Pottery to Textile

By Barbie Thomas

Ceramic yarn is one of the man-made mineral fibers, popularly known as mineral wool. They are made from natural or synthetic minerals or metal oxides. Ceramic yarn is noted for its high temperature resistance above 1000°C. Textile made from ceramic fiber yarns have outstanding characteristics of lightweight, low thermal conductivity and chemical stability that can resist attack from most corrosive agents. The ceramic fiber yarns are used in high temperature sealing and in producing ceramic fiber tape, rope or fabrics. The ceramic fabrics are widely used in thermal insulation industry.

The Making of Ceramic Yarn

To make ceramic fibers, chemicals like silica are heated until they are molten, and then they are spun into hair-like strands. To make ceramic yarns, ceramic fibers are carded with a blend of organic fibers to make rovings. Rovings are soft strands of fiber that have been twisted, attenuated, and freed from foreign matters such as dust etc. before converting into yarn. Then a reinforcement of glass filament or steel wire is introduced to it. This combination is then spun to produce the ceramic yarns. In applications where tensile strength is significant, textiles manufactured from a glass filament reinforced yarn may be used up to 550ºC. Textiles manufactured from steel reinforced yarn may be used up to 1050°C. Where tensile strength is not so important, yarns and textiles may be used up to 1260ºC.

Industrial Applications of Ceramic Yarn Fabrics

Ceramic yarns and textiles are mainly applied to a wide range of high temperature sealing and insulating applications. It means that they are used in materials that come in contact of high temperatures so as to prevent or reduce the passage, transfer, or leakage of heat and electricity. A good example of this type of product is ceramic blankets. Ceramic fiber ropes are also used as heat insulation materials and a substitute for asbestos rope. NASA engineers had used ceramics for Shuttle tiles that could stand up to the heat of reentry. The fibers were used to fill gaps between orbiter tiles and were woven into insulation blankets, heat shields and other protective items.

General Uses of Ceramic Yarn Fabrics

Apart from being used in industries as insulating material, ceramic yarn is now also used for warm weather fashion clothing due to its cool nature. However, such fabrics have ceramic in very low percentage. For example, one of such ceramic fabrics is made up of 95% rayon & 5% ceramic. They keep the wearers cool and protect their skin from harmful UVA & UVB rays. They are, in fact, capable of dropping the surface skin temperature by at least 5 degrees. Due to their soft sheen, anti-static and washable qualities, they are gradually becoming a choice of fabric for babies & infant wear. Ceramic yarns are also fast becoming popular for knitting projects due to their same properties of being cool, soft and silky apart from UVA & UVB rays protective.

Flexible Circuit Boards Have Varied Uses and Features

By Denis W Smith

Flexible printed circuits are widely used today because of low cost, ease of assembly in interconnection systems, and the low volumes that they occupy. Board-to-board, board-to-chip, and chip-to-chip connections are areas where they are most used. They are also essential in packages with limited space and stacked rigid boards, thus demanding three-dimensional connections. The largest of use of flexible circuits can be seen in portable electronic products. These include notebook (NB), mobile phone, personal digital assistant (PDA) and information appliance (IA). The flexible printed circuit board, for example, can work as an interface between a liquid crystal display (LCD), a floppy disk driver (FDD), a hard disk driver (HDD) or a compact disc read only memory driver (CD-ROM) to a motherboard. Such is the wide usefulness of Flexible circuit boards.

Flexible circuits with optical and electrical components have become essential since optoelectronics has spread into more and more applications. Prefabricated optical fibers are used to assemble flexible circuits in such situations. Wherever fiber management is needed flexible circuit boards are used. Flexible optical circuits, for example, greatly used as as optical backplanes in order to interconnect a number of printed circuit boards. These can also serve as ribbons of optical fibers in order to route the optical fibers in an designated

There are four types of flexible printed circuit board. This division is based on functions. They are: lead line, printed circuit, connector, and integration function system. The flexible circuit connector includes an insulative housing mounted to the rigid circuit board. In all, it is obvious that with such varied features and uses flexible boards have emerged as a top choice as far as the electronic industry is concerned today.

Pinehurst Golf Estate Lot

By Steve Graves

Residents and visitors alike enjoy the accommodations and amenities of the Four Diamond Pinehurst Resort, which operates eight different golf courses and a spa. Committed to offering top quality services, the Village of Pinehurst strives to ensure that residents enjoy a wonderful quality of life and visitors have a memorable experience. Originally known as Tuftstown, Pinehurst was established in 1895 when Boston philanthropist James Tufts purchased 5,800 acres of timberland in central North Carolina. Tufts was intrigued by the area's mild climate and wanted to create a winter retreat and health resort here.

He commissioned Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of New York's Central Park, to lay out the village streets. In 1896, the Holly Inn opened, and the area had 20 cottages, a general store and a dairy. Some hotel guests introduced the game of golf without the benefit of a course .In 1898, a rudimentary nine-hole course was constructed. By 1901, Tufts had opened what is now the Pinehurst Resort complete with riding, hunting, polo, lawn bowling, bicycling, tennis and archery.

The same year, Tufts hired Donald Ross, the "father of modern golf architecture," to oversee golf operations. The acclaimed Pinehurst No. 2 course, one of many he designed or redesigned, is ranked as one of the best in the world. By 1903, Pinehurst was becoming a major national golf center.

In another colorful chapter of Pinehurst history, Annie Oakley, sharpshooter and star of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, arrived in 1916. She stayed for four years to give shooting exhibitions and instruction at the Pinehurst Gun Club.

The Golf Club at #6 reopened in 2005 as a championship course. Renovations by Tom Fazio have increased shot values, developed all new putting greens and re-bunkered the entire course - making it a strong addition to the championship golf set at Pinehurst. You'll find the terrain different here - rolling hills make for a test from the tee box. The back nine is one the most difficult anywhere. One thing rings true - it continues to be a favorite for those who love Fazio designs. Today the largest single parcel of land for residential use adjacent to #6 course 16th hole is available for purchase at a bargain price. Information on the property is available at:

Aluminum Frames Vs PVC Or Wood - Are They Worth the Extra Cost?

By Bee Primrose

Having lived with all three types of windows and patio doors in the past three years, I feel that I am an 'expert user' when it comes to opening and closing in each medium: wood, pvc and aluminium.

First, the novice's choice: wood. It looks great, feels warm, can be stained a medium or dark shade or painted any colour of the spectrum. It's an age-old medium so what can go wrong? The main problems are humidity and strong sunlight.

There are varying qualities of wood on offer, depending on your budget. A moderately-priced pair of French doors on a south-facing house wall suffered a degree of warping, creating gaps that had to be plugged each winter in an attempt to keep the cold draughts at bay whereas, in warmer damp circumstances, the door had to be forcibly pushed and pulled back into its aperture.

Two good summers and the four coats of varnish had virtually vapourised, revealing cracking wood that needed nourishing and protecting from the next couple of years' weather.

Second, the double-glazing salesman's special offer: PVC. Overpriced by a couple of well-known companies who then discount by 50% if you hesitate, PVC is also available in varying qualities. At the higher end of the market, the frames are often reinforced with metal.

Generally with more features than wooden doors and windows, PVC should not require much more than a quick wipe with a damp cloth for the first few years and its looks are therefore easier to maintain. We have some PVC French Doors from the lower price range. As value for money, they are quite good but an element of trust is lacking in terms of defence against determined intruders. They feel floppy and flimsy when opening and closing and there's a knack to locking and unlocking them successfully. We have older PVC doors from the higher price range and, whilst more sturdy (reinforced with metal) they are looking a tad ratty.

The PVC windows screeched with wind whistling through, like semi-detached tinnitus.

Thirdly and finally, the long term investment: powder-coated aluminium frames. If you are fed up with sanding down wooden frames and considering the easy option of PVC or coated aluminium, particularly for a wide opening with multi-folding doors. Consider whether PVC is up to the task of substituting for the wall of your house.

Stand back and look through closed doors at the difference between PVC and aluminium - it is very noticeable. With PVC, there are windows of scenery between wide areas of plastic (two frames together might measure between 8 and 10 inches, 20 to 25cms) so the doors block up to 20 per cent of the potential view and light-source.

Aluminium frames on bifolding doors from manufacturer SunSeeker Doors, being stronger, are only about 2 inches or 5 centimeters. The profile is also considerably smaller so the doors use far less space than PVC or wood when folded back. For those who want color, several options are available to order, the most popular (after standard white) are: Grey, blue, green, brown and silver. Aluminium Frames are more expensive than cheap PVC or wood but prices are comparable with the better quality PVC doors. Is aluminum worth the extra cost? If you want the "wow" factor, strength, longevity, maximum living space and the most panoramic view,Yes.

The author is a customer of SunSeeker Doors http://sunseekerdoors.co.uk who independently researched prior to being asked to write testimonials for the company.
SunSeeker Doors measures, manufactures and installs bifolding doors from their Bedfordshire UK location. All sales have been sourced by recommendation or via their web site and they DO NOT employ hard-sell techniques.

Flood Water Damage and What You Can Do About It

By Sam Barton

Flood water damage is a devastating occurrence. Flooding is happening more frequently in areas that are prone to it and other areas that once thought they were safe are seeing damage. You need to know how to protect yourself and to recover from flood damage in your home or business.

Begin by making sure that you are covered in the event of a flood. Check your insurance policy yearly to be sure you are covered. Many policies do not cover flood and you may need a separate policy for this. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer flood water damage, immediately contact your insurance agent. They may have a company that they work with or can recommend for quality work.

The most important thing to remember is safety. Be sure that all electricity is turned off at the source and wear rubber boots and gloves before entering your home or business. If there is basement water damage, you will need to use a pump to clear out the water. After the water is removed, use a mop to finish the job. Remove any water soaked items by washing and drying or placing in the garage. This will help to eliminate moisture from the air.

With water damage on the floor, again, remove any wet carpet and padding. The padding may need to be replaced. Dry the carpet and keep it away from the walls. They will absorb moisture and ruin the baseboards and sheet rock. Remove any other wet items out of the house. When you speak with a water damage company, be sure they can be there within 24-36 hours. Any longer and dangerous mold will begin to grow. It can be difficult and expensive to clean and remove once there.

Flood water damage, if taken care of quickly and by a professional cleaning company doesn't need to ruin all of your possessions. Be sure to use a qualified company and you will have the best chance of recovering your home and business.

Living on Borrowed Land

The last week of April 2009 has certainly been a memorable one for me, a land developer and project coordinator in the affordable home industry. The week capped off a month that seemed to bring the promise that business was beginning to pick up. What began as a normal project ended up as an emotional ride for one of my new clients.

Last Wednesday I received a called from an elderly gentleman "Mr. C" (I'll call him) to coordinate a replacement home project pulling building and septic permits for his new modular home. He was very pushy and matter of fact about his entire project and precise as to what his expectations were. He certainly appeared to know what he needed and seemed to have the know how, but did not have the time to perform the task. Therefore he hired me to handle all the legwork and coordinate all the improvements to his land.

When I asked him to provide me with a survey that would help me get my bearings, he informed me that he had been living there since 1991 and knew there would be no problems regarding the location of all his improvements. He went on to say that a surveyor would be there shortly. Since we were replacing a manufactured home with a modular home and everything looked normal, I went ahead and staked the new home location. He wanted it positioned further back, away from the road and 25 feet in front of a mounded septic system.

At this point I decided to hold back on submitting the paperwork to building/zoning and Environmental Health Department for the septic, until I knew for certain what the new survey would reveal. As I was leaving the property, the surveyor came onto the scene and began setting up.

The next morning as I was traveling to an appointment, I got the call. It was Mr. C, in a very low key voice, telling me his property line was smack down the middle of his old home and existing septic system. My first thought was the location of his well and was it inside his property line. Fortunately for him, it was.

Mr. C had been living on his property for almost two decades before finally realizing he had been encroaching a neighbors parcel of land. Since he is mortgaging his new home, the lender requires a survey, so major adjustments must be made.

Okay, do I have to tell you just how important a survey is? It took eighteen years for Mr. C to learn the answer to that question the hard way. Fortunately for him, the building process had not yet started, but it is very likely his septic system will have to be abandoned and a new one installed with a lift station. Also, he must still deal with the neighbor as two of his small outbuildings are no longer attached to his property. Needless to say, the ramifications of not having a survey, sooner or later are going to come back on you.

There are no laws requiring you have a survey. However banks require them when mortgaging property or setting up a land home package. Lenders understand that surveys are like insurance policies, a guarantee that you are on the right property and that you meet your setbacks are their two main reasons. What is disheartening is lenders only require a final survey, therefore many builders and landowners wont' know until the very end whether they meet the required jurisdictional or deed restricted setbacks or that they are even on the right property. The correct method is to have a corner survey performed for guidance, then a finished survey after the improvements are added to your parcel of land. Avoiding an initial corner survey is very risky. Be careful and get a survey!

Timeshare Rentals - Everything You Wanted to Know, But Where Too Afraid to Ask

By Robert J. Howells

Choosing a Timeshare Property

There are thousands of timeshare resorts and properties out in the market to choose from. You may find a property that you love from the beginning and be very happy with your choice. However, if you are thinking of entering the timeshare market for the first time, unless you know exactly where you want to have your home resort, a place that you would enjoy vacationing at and are certain that you will like the amenities and services that the resort provides; you should consider renting. Then after trying the timeshare vacation lifestyle, you can intelligently choose the resort that's right for you.

Rent or Buy?

A timeshare rental will allow you to try the property out first - before you buy. The advantages of a timeshare rental instead of a purchase are like renting a house or apartment; you will have no maintenance fees, no major contracts and no obligations and, you may just be able to find a rental at a great price!

Location, Location, Location

The downside of timeshare rental is generally the cost and availability. You will have to start looking for your rental months in advance if you have a specific location in mind, especially in season. You will of course have to do this every year. Quality luxury villas in season may run as high as $300.00 per night plus. That being said, renting or test driving a timeshare before you purchase is the smart way to go. You will have a much better idea of where you would like to own and may have even decided on a specific timeshare resort based upon it fitting your needs. For example: one that offers the most value for the money together with maximum flexibility, might be something that you are looking for.

Renting your Timeshare

If you are currently a timeshare owner, the ability to rent out your timeshare is an attractive option if you are not able to use it for some reason. For the price you are able to rent your timeshare for, you are usually able to cover the maintenance and possibly a portion beyond that amount. Due to the advent of the internet, posting an advertisement for a timeshare rental is a fairly simple process and the timeshare rentals historically are snapped up by people looking for affordable vacation accommodations.

Secure Payment when Renting

Keep in mind; if you are an owner and you need to rent out your timeshare and want to post information about your timeshare rental, you will have to do it several months in advance of the rental period. Since you will most likely be dealing with someone that is renting your timeshare that lives in another city, receiving the funds in a certified check, money order or using a service on the internet like Pay Pal where you can get proof of secure payment is recommended. If you are dealing with a reputable timeshare rental service, they will handle this for you.

Shopping With Children in Barcelona

By David Brydon

The city centre of Barcelona is a myriad of winding streets and open boulevards, all with fantastic shopping on offer. And the city centre is fairly void of traffic save a few major avenues, making your stroll through the Gothic Quarter, or down the famous Las Ramblas strip to the port even easier, especially if you're travelling with little ones in tow - and I can compare that to say Rome, which anyone will tell you is crazy!

However, there are some great shops for kids along your travels which I thought might not necessarily be found so easily on your own, so here's a little help.

First up is Lefties. This is the outlet store from the mega Spanish brand Zara, and has some fantastic bargains on offer, in both footwear for children and funky, fashionable clothing, too. There are a few locations in the city, but the two most central locations are at Plaça Universitat and in the Maremagnum complex over the Rambla del Mar bridge on your way into Port Vell. Lefties is not to be missed! Also, a little further down from the Plaça Universitat store, is C & A. The English chain store closed many of its European stores a couple of years ago but Barcelona survived, and apart from a large 3rd floor dedicated solely to kidswear, the building itself is really beautiful, and is sufficiently stocked with things for both kids, babies and parents alike.

Around the corner on Las Ramblas is a fairly new H & M store (one of many dotted around the city), and high street fashion is at an accessible price here, too. Las Ramblas is a great place for you to entertain the younger members of the family, with various human statues and street performers, along with flower stalls, painters and caricature sketchers and puppeteers to pass the walk down to Christopher Columbus monument.

From here, it's a great place to cross the previously mentioned bridge into the Maremagnum shopping Mall, where you can find Imaginarium, which is an educational-based toy store, and has a cute little entrance for children right next to the main door (a feature in all their stores). There are some children's show shops inside Maremagnum, too, and other street fashion shops dealing specifically for children. This is all indoors, and close to the city's Aquarium and IMAX Cinema, too, making it a worthwhile trip for any family, especially a Sunday, where it's one of the few places where shops are open.

David Brydon has been living in Barcelona for 9 years and writes about Apartment for rent Barcelona and regularly contributes to this great Barcelona Guide.
