Come to Wrexham For the Science, Stay For the Beauty!

By Simon Haughtone

Wrexham is the largest town in North Wales and has applied for city status. In the twelfth century this area was the location of a motte - an early form of castle. Then later, when Denbighsire was created as a county in North Wales, Wrexham was added to this county's town list.

Wrexham started off as a small industrial town and market town. It was primarily involved with the leather industry. Several small cottage industries built up around local tanners and skinners. Later the industrial revolution arrived in North Wales in the eighteenth century and an ironworks and smelting plant was opened in the area bringing much needed work and an influx of workers.

Visitors to Wrexham can explore its historic town centre full of buildings in traditional tudor style. There are also many major on-going and planned refurbishments to the area. There has been a much-needed regeneration planned for the town centre itself which will bring a new vibrancy to the centre of town.

Visitors also flock to the annual science festival which is held in March. This popular and well attended event has been known to attract several thousands of people to the town. They come from Wales itself as well as from all over Europe. The science festival culminates in a one day family science extravaganza called scientrific. This attracts families to talks, exhibitions and demonstrations. A much loved visitor attraction.

As well as this, Wrexham houses a more permanent attraction in the form of one of Britain's finest stately homes. Errdig Hall was first built in 1684 and has passed through several hands since then. Now it is a National Trust property and has been completely refurbished to its former glory. The spacious house sits in several acres of well preserved formal gardens which contain rare fruit trees and a canal. There is something to suit every taste in Wrexham!

Home Exchange Vacations - Managing the Risks

Home exchange or house swap holidays are a great way to enjoy a cheap and convenient vacation. They are available through hundreds of websites that have thousands of happy customers. For the uninitiated, however, house swapping with strangers arranged over the internet might bring worries about thefts, damage, insurance, even squatters! However, most house exchange companies will tell you (probably quite truthfully) that any such problems are extremely rare. This is because anyone who joins a house exchange scheme should in theory be like-minded as they are offering their properties to strangers as well.

Choosing the right website/company

This is not usually a problem as the workings of house swap holidays are fairly straightforward thus reducing the chances of encountering an inefficient business. You can reduce the risk by opting for an established company which has a large number of listings but you shouldn't ignore smaller operations which might suit your needs better. A larger company will not offer you any more legal or contractual cover (as explained below). Some house exchange sites indicate how many successful swaps members have undertaken and this could give some extra peace of mind if your swappers were experienced (and therefore there were no previous problems with them).

Legal issues regarding problems

Ultimately all house exchange companies whether they have thousands of listings or whether they just started up yesterday, will get you to sign some kind of agreement to their 'Terms & Conditions' or acceptance of liability. Some companies have contracts for you to sign when you engage in a house exchange but a lawyer will tell you that they are just a promise of good-will rather than any legally binding document. This acceptance of liability should not put you off as again, you are dealing with people in the same position as you who should be very unlikely to cause problems. In the worst case scenario you would be able to take legal action against the individuals that caused the problem (but not the house exchange business).

Insurance issues

Most house exchange systems, whether involving a direct swap or 'non-simultaneous' exchanges, do not earn the owner of a property any money for having people stay in their house. This reduces insurance problems immediately and prevents further problems with subletting and income tax etc. As the people staying in your home are invited guests then your Contents Policy should cover you for accidental breakages, losses and other damage. Of course you should check your policy carefully in case there is an issue with those people not being known to you. A house exchange network with just your extended friends does avoid this risk.

House guest's standards

Not very serious but probably the most common problem with house exchange holidays is miscommunication and misunderstandings about laundry, replacing food and cleaning etc. Despite this article doing its best to put your mind at rest claiming that all house swappers are of the same mind as you, we of course all have different standards and habits! This risk of problems can easily be managed by establishing clear communication and understanding, prior to any house exchange situation. Most companies will have good guide sheets and checklists for you to complete and leave for your guests.

Paying your money but not being able to swap

Companies work with different systems (see my Ezine article "House Exchange Holidays - A Beginner's Basic Guide") but there is a risk that you could pay your joining fee and then not be able to arrange a suitable holiday. If the site runs a direct swap system then holidays are difficult to coordinate with your perfect dates and destinations etc. However, if there is just a one-off joining fee then you could view this as a long-term investment that doesn't cost you anything extra until you manage to arrange that cheap holiday. Check the property listings before joining if that is possible as this might give you some indication of how successful you might be in arranging your desired vacation. Some house exchange websites use a non-simultaneous exchange where you choose from a database of properties and book to stay in one when it is available. This is easier to coordinate and organize as there is no direct swap involved, but it means that you have to be confident in your ability to offer an empty property at a certain time, irrespective of whether you manage to arrange your exchange holiday during the same period or not. This typically suits people offering a second home or holiday property that is empty. If you can be flexible and don't have specific and urgent holiday requirements then most companies have something to offer you. You don't have much to lose by joining up and you can even become a member of multiple websites to improve your chances of success.

Last minute problems as you set off!

A remote risk is having set up a house exchange which involves flights, amongst other arrangements, and for there to be an unexpected problem beyond the control of the respective party. No guarantees can be given by anyone involved beforehand but again remember that everyone in the scheme is in the same position as you and would hopefully do everything possible to resolve the issue. Good travel insurance will provide a financial safety net. Also a non-simultaneous scheme does reduce this risk as the properties are more likely to be second homes which are empty rather than a full-time family home.

The risks are real but serious problems are very unlikely and these are similar to problems you might encounter if you booked a more conventional holiday or even if you stayed at home!

The rewards of house swap holidays of course, far out-weigh the risks outlined above i.e. extremely low-cost vacations, the comforts and facilities of a home, a more authentic experience of a location etc.

Richard Overens is British but has been an expatriate for 13 years and is settled in Hong Kong. He runs http://www.friendsinfarplaces.com . As far as we know this is the only site which enables you to create your own extended network of friends for house exchange, rather than joining a network of strangers. Your network extends out to friends of friends and their friends too in order to widen your choices whilst keeping the personal connection. Friends in a network choose to stay in places when they are available and no simultaneous swaps are needed. As with all house exchange schemes, this is an incredibly cheap way to holiday but removes a lot of the risks and concerns.

Boston Cheap Eats - Where to Find the Best in the City

By Susan Vik

Wondering where to dine inexpensively but well in Boston? You'll want to know about Boston Cheap Eats - places where you can find great food for $10 or less. Boston locals know where to find affordable and delicious restaurants and cafes in even the priciest parts of the city. If you're visiting Boston, you'll want to discover these places too. Keep reading to find out where you can find 3 of the best.

In Downtown Boston, everyone flocks to the fabulous Quincy Market Food Hall in the Faneuil Hall complex on the Freedom Trail. Walk into this historic building, where food vendors have offered tempting treats since the 1820s, and you'll see why. "Stalls" lining a long hallway display an amazing assortment of local specialties - creamy New England chowder, souvlaki and other Greek favorites, mouth-watering Italian pastries, fresh fruit bowls.

Making a choice can be tough. Fortunately, prices are low, and you can put together a feast for under $10. Take your goodies down to a table in the light-filled rotunda at the end of the building, or head outside for an impromptu picnic on the nearby Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Several blocks away in the Chinatown section of Downtown Boston, you'll find dozens of Asian restaurants, large and small, where you can dine very well for under $10. But with so many, how do you choose? My own favorite Boston Cheap Eats place in this area is 163 Vietnamese Sandwich (66 Harrison Ave). It occupies a tiny space, not much more than 12 feet wide and with only 6 chairs and 3 small tables, but serves up absolutely delicious Vietnamese sandwiches and other treats.

Beef rice plates and noodle dishes are wonderful. The fruit shake bobas (bubble tea) are so filling that they're almost a complete meal in themselves. But too good to miss are the delicious bahn mi wraps, Vietnamese sandwiches stuffed full of veggies and grilled meat or tofu "duck." Amazingly, everything on the menu is well under $5.

Saunter over to Boston's ritzy Back Bay neighborhood, and you'll find more affordable restaurants and casual cafes. One of the most interesting is Piattini Wine Cafe (226 Newbury Street). Specializing in small plates of perfectly cooked Italian specialties and great wines (and other beverages) by the glass, Piattini's manages to keep almost everything under $10 on the lunch menu, and many, if not most items under $10 on the dinner menu.

Don't think that "small" plates mean that you'll go away hungry. They contain enough food that one plate will be plenty unless you've worked up an enormous appetite shopping in Back Bay's designer stores. Admittedly, a glass or two of wine will probably push you over the $10 mark, but you can certainly just have water with your meal.

What to order? The salads are fabulous - think of great combos like spicy sauteed shrimp with honey-glazed pecans, or smoked salmon with baby spinach. But you'll also find wonderful pastas, panini, risottos...and a dessert menu definitely worth considering. After all, you can always do more shopping to work off the extra calories.

These three choices are just a few of the many Boston Cheap Eats where you'll find delicious food at affordable prices. Come visit Boston, and find your own favorites!

How to Save Money With Attic Insulation

By Edward Nave

Attic insulation itself is not all that expensive and if you are able to do the work yourself then you are able to save even more money. Remember, even though you may not be in the middle of winter at this very moment, it will come faster than you think.

When it comes to money and your monthly budget, it is important to make sure that you are cutting expenses anywhere and everywhere that you can. Since you just never know what is going to happen from day to day with your job, it is important to prepare as much for the future while you still have the ability to do so.

Making some improvements around the house with such things as attic insulation is a great way to save money. While some people would say that they cannot afford to put insulation in right now, what they should be saying is that they cannot afford not to. To save money you sometimes have to spend a little.

This means that you need to be prepared by purchasing everything you need for the job now. If it is summertime then you do not have to worry about completing the project in a few days, which means you can take your time with the attic insulation, within reason of course.

Make sure that you are shopping around in order to find the best deals on attic insulation, which means that you can save money that can be applied to other things in the house. Also make sure that you are shopping for the drywall and other materials that you are going to need to complete the job.

You will need to make sure that you will have the job finished before winter hits. The attic insulation will do wonders for your heating bills. You will actually notice the difference right away within the first month's heating bill.

So while you may think that the purchase of attic insulation does not really save money in the beginning you may be wrong. Save all of your heating bills for the following winter and compare them to what you are used to spending. More in likely you will be surprised to see that even after calculating the cost of the improvements, you still saved money.

After a few years, you will have saved yourself thousands of dollars with the new attic insulation that you installed. Think of what that money can do for you, your family, and your home. There are probably other improvements that can be made for energy efficiency.

So while you may have to spend a little in the beginning for the attic insulation project, you will save money in the long run. Consider it an investment for not just your heating bills but also for the value of your home.

If you ever had to sell your home, the added benefit of having attic insulation in the home will show potential homebuyers that they too can save money on their heating bills. This makes your home a more attractive choice for anyone looking to purchase a new home.

Wymondham, Norfolk - Fine Buildings in an Old Market Town

By Simon Haughtone

The long-standing market town of Wymondham (which is actually pronounced Windham) is one of the largest parishes in Norfolk, comprising 4431 hectares or 11,000 acres. King John issued the first market charter in 1204, but markets had probably been held here long before it was declared officially a market town. The market place is the setting for many events, including weekly farmers markets and many summer activities.

Over the centuries, industry has been as much a part of the town as markets. It has been a renowned woodturning centre, which became a brush making industry and eventually Wymondham was a part of the Norfolk woollen industry, using handlooms for weaving woollen cloth. The woollen industry faltered mid-nineteenth century which led to extensive poverty in the town and surrounding areas.

Wymondham was largely forgotten during Victorian times, but this has meant that the town centre remains much as it would have been in middle years of the 17th century. A deliberately-lit fire destroyed about 300 buildings in 1615, and so the town has buildings dating from 1400 mixed with those re-built after the fire. These buildings are fine examples of the architecture of the times.

The most famous landmark in Wymondham is the Abbey. It was originally founded in 1107 as a priory and it wasn't until the 15th century that it became an Abbey. It has twin towers, a central octagonal ones built by the early monks and the large tower in the west of the building that was built by the people of the town. King Henry VIII dissolved the Abbey and much of it was destroyed; only the eastern end survives today as the Parish Church.

Other buildings that have survived from ancient times include the Becket's Chapel, built in 1174 in dedication to the newly canonized St. Thomas (Sir Thomas a'Beckett) and the Green Dragon Inn, a 15th century inn which is the oldest in Wymondham. The local railway station was built in 1845 and it has been restored to include a restaurant, tea rooms, a railway museum and a gift shop. The restoration has won the station well-earned recognition and awards.

The Harbor Town of Watchet, Somerset

By Simon Haughtone

The small town of Watchet, Somerset boasts a harbor in addition to a pastoral setting. Having only around 4,400 residents, this location has been established for a long time, with the earliest written records of Watchet being from 987. Watchet rests on the edge of a national park, giving it a great degree of beauty to draw from.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge spent time passing through Watchet, Somerset. His time there helped him write his famous poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, as it was penned while he was passing through. The town's location near the Exmoor National Park played a large deal into this inspiration.

The harbor part of the town rests on the Bristol Channel, to the southwest of the country of Britain. The harbor was in frequent use for a long time, especially during the 1500s when it helped to import wine and salt from France. Other items have been frequently imported and exported from Watchet, from wool to kelp, iron ore and paper.

The actual harbor itself is considered to be the principle landmark in Watchet. It has been rebuilt a number of times throughout history, but the strongest one was constructed by local wool merchants in the 18th Century. The harbor remained in commercial use until the year 2000, where it was converted into a local marina. Many museums are located throughout the town, all dedicated to the different types of industries, ships, and history located around the use of the harbor.

Other attractions rest around Watchet, Somerset. Daw's Castle, a hillside fort, is believed to have originated in the Iron Age, although King Alfred later fortified it as a defense against Vikings. Cleeve Abbey, as well, remains as one of the best preserved monasteries from medieval times. This lies close to Watchet as well, giving the town more attraction.

10 Free Things to Do in London

By Jonny C.

For the expectant backpacker, nothing could be more exciting than arriving in London. This is one of the world's very best cities in terms of so many things; whether you're here to visit museums, view architecture, go on urban hikes, chill in a park, or party until you can't quite remember what day it is, London is simply the place to be.

Unfortunately, London prices are some of the highest in the world. But don't fear! There are plenty of ways to cut back expenditure while spending time here. For a start, cheap London hostels are plentiful; they provide an affordable and sociable place to rest your head and meet new people.

There's also a glut of totally free things to do in London. Here, then, is a rundown of ten of the best...

1) Tour the Museums
Not so long back, the British Government did a truly great thing: it made public museums in the city free to enter. As such, world-renowned collections of art and historical exhibitions are open to one and all, from the cutting-edge art of the Tate Modern to the prehistoric dinosaurs of the National History Museum.

2) Head to a Park
For such a busy and - some would claim - congested place, London is actually blessed with many large green spaces, which effectively function as the city's lungs. Hyde Park is the headlining attraction, although Hampstead Heath, Richmond and Greenwich can prove better options, as they are farther form the hubbub of the inner city.

3) Enjoy Free Breakfast
If you're staying in a London hostel, chances are your room rate includes a free morning breakfast. Stock up as the day begins, then, and save your self the agony of buying food once out in the city. It can be a little expensive, to say the least.

4) Tour the Markets
For those who like to browse market displays, London is a veritable slice of heaven. From the up market stalls of Portobello to the skuzzy fare of Camden, London's markets cover just about everything. An insider's tip: Try the Columbia Road Flower Market on Sundays. A visual feast, it's off the beaten track as far as tourists are concerned.

5) Walk along the Southbank
Especially on weekends, London's Southbank is a dizzying assortment of street performers, book markets, and audiences heading to a play at the Globe or a film at the National Film Theatre. Sit on a public bench and watch this open-air theatre come to life.

6) The Friday Night Skate
Every Friday a cavalcade of skaters zoom through the streets of London. This isn't one for the feint hearted, and you'll need to sort out your own footwear, but for those who can make it, the Friday Night Skate is a magnificent bastion of underground culture in the city.

7) Tour the Blue Plaques
Across London, the houses of historical figures are marked with iconic Blue Plaques, which explain who lived in the house they adorn, and when. You can even categorize these plaques, perhaps touring those dedicated to literary figures, or those that honor great philosophical figures.

8) Take in a Film at the Roxy Bar and Screen
The Roxy Bar and Screen in Borough screens films for free every night of the week. While you should probably buy at least one drink for the sake of politeness, films still don't come cheaper than this.

9) Westminster Abbey
The visually stunning Westminster Abbey, in the heart of the city of London, is absolutely free to enter. A huge Gothic edifice, this has been the site of the coronation of British monarchs for over a thousand years.

10) Take in the View from Primrose Hill
Primrose Hill in the north of London is a little known gem of an attraction. While many tourists pay through the teeth for a ride on the signature Millennium Eye, Primrose Hill offers just as good a view, and without the disadvantage of creeping claustrophobia. What's more, it's absolutely totally 100% free!

Before settling down and becoming a copywriter for HostelBookers.com Jonny Cooper did a backpacking tour of the UK and he checked out a variety of hostels including hostel London.

Walsall, West Midlands - Part of the Black Country

By Simon Haughtone

Walsall, West Midlands, is a large manufacturing and industrial town located in west midlands and is part of the area known as Black Country. The town has a significant population of over a hundred and seventy thousand people and was traditionally home to a thriving lock making industry. Walsall was a small market town with weekly markets held up until the time of the industrial revolution when it was transformed into a manufacturing hub for a variety of products including chains, buckles, locks etc. Limestone quarrying also became a chief source of income for the town.

Although Walsall grew by leaps and bounds and came to be called the town of a hundred trades, its growth when compared to that of the nearby city of Birmingham is not so fantastic. This is attributed to the late introduction of railways to the town. Walsall is now well connected by a bus station and busy railway station to the rest of the country.

Modern Walsall is home to many industries such as plastics, leather, electronics, chemicals and aircraft parts manufacturing. It is currently undergoing urban regeneration and redevelopment. The popular tourist attractions include the Walsall Arboretum and the New Art Gallery that showcases works by famous painters like Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir and Constable. It also hosts many modern shopping arcades such as Crown Wharf Retail Park and Park Place Shopping Center.

Walsall has also its own local football, cricket and hockey clubs and until recently hosted equestrian events. Walsall is home to many famous artists in the media and entertainment industry. It's the home town of the famous writer, Jerome K. Jerome and the television and media personality, Meera Syal.

Walsall has been traditionally overshadowed by its much larger neighbor, Birmingham but has slowly and steadily gained its reputation as an industrial town in West Midlands. It is the most populous town in the West Midlands County as well.

Best Bookshops in Barcelona

Barcelona is great for shopping. The Catalan Capital has one of the biggest "shopping areas" marked on your Barcelona map, and designated by the Barcelona City Council, and there used to be a "Shopping Line" which was a free bus taking you 5 kilometres and covering some of the 35,000 shops in the city. Many of the biggest Spanish brands such as Custo, Zara, Desigual have prime spots along Las Ramblas, Passeig de Gracia and other select locations sitting side by side with the likes of high street brands such as H & M, and more exclusive boutiques - the likes of Armani, Fendi, Gucci, Calvin Klein, etc.

However, one often overlooked aspect of the city's shopping is books. Barcelona is a great place to buy books, and not just Spanish or Catalan books - there are some great English sources to find, too.

Books are also big business in Barcelona. The Patron Saint of Catalonia is Saint George, and on the 23rd April - Saint George's Day and a national holiday in Catalonia - it is tradition for boys to present a rose to the girls, representing the blood of the slain dragon. And what do the boys receive in return? A book - the 23rd April is also the anniversary of Spain's most famous Author, Miguel Cervantes, whose works include the fantastic "Don Quixote de La Mancha". The city's streets fill up with mobile bookstores, and the famous Las Ramblas is a mass of coloured roses. So where to go if you want to find some good books?

A great place to start would be FNAC, at the top of Las Ramblas, inside "El Triangle" at Plaça Catalunya - the city's main square. The French chain is along the lines of a HMV, or a Virgin Megastore, and stocks DVDs, CDs' and a fairly impressive bookstore, including a great travel section and a fair amount of English books, too.

Just a short walk away and another great stop for books is "Portal del Angel" street - real fans of Barcelona literature could even take a shortcut through Carrer Santa Ana, which was the home of leading character "Daniel" in Carlos Ruiz Zafon's bestseller "The Shadow of the Wind". Here you can find the Spanish Chain Store "El Corte Inglés" whose book collection also has an impressive English collection of reference and non-fiction. Continue down towards the inner winding walkways of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona and "Happy Books" speaks for itself and has a few shops within the city itself.

Away from the old town into Poble Sec neighbourhood also houses a real gem - Elephant, a second hand English bookstore where you can come and exchange old novels and pick up some great new ones, too.

Moving on to some of the rest of the bookstores in Barcelona (not necessarily English, or with a good English collection), then BCN Books also has a good collection of books over 3 stores in downtown Barcelona, and "Casa del Libro" (the Book house, or house of books) also dates as far back as 1923. Finally, if it's travel books you're looking for, then look no further than Altair on Gran Via, number 616. This extremely central bookstore has everything you can think of with regards to world travel, anthropology, geography and is a great place to compare.

David Brydon has been living in Barcelona for 9 years and writes about Apartment for rent Barcelona and regularly contributes to this great Barcelona Guide.

Find the Best Dehumidifier Online

By Jonathan Troke

If you're interested in Dehumidifiers and are also curious about where to find the best dehumidifier online then the following information may be of use to you. Some people believe that a dehumidifier is nothing more than a glorified, floor model air conditioner or something of the sort. While in one sense that view is not completely off base, a dehumidifier is much more. It can assist with air quality issues and there are people out there who depend on dehumidifiers to help them with their health problems.

This particular article will focus on where you can find the best dehumidifier online. Also a few basic tips of what to look for in a dehumidifier and why they are beneficial in the majority of situations and living conditions.

In the air that you are breathing right now there is water. It is an a gaseous form and you probably cannot see it but it is there. The amount of this water is what is known as humidity. A high amount of humidity in the air can have certain effects on yourself and your home. There are some people who have respiratory problems and require their environment to be one of low humidity.

Another issue a high humidity content can have would be to contribute to dampness which in turn promotes mold growth. An occurrence of which is, as you most likely are aware, not desirable and if left unchecked can produce even more severe health and environment issues.

It is for these reasons that utilizing a dehumidifier in the proper way can be an important piece of equipment to look into. A dehumidifier works by taking in the surrounding air and removing the water or humidity from it. The water is transformed from its state of being a gas into a liquid. Most dehumidifiers either fill an accompanied bucket or basin with the extracted water or pump it through a drain of your choice.

The water that is taken out of the air would be pure but it is not filtered and the bucket or tube which is passes through will quickly become unsanitary which is why it is suggested that the collected water not be used for human consumption. If you wish to do something with the water that was extracted from your home via the dehumidifier than it would be advisable to use it to water plants or something similar.

This is not an extensive explanation on how a dehumidifier works. There are many more variables and terms that are used by those in the dehumidifier field. These will discussed in future articles and will be the topics further explained later on.

For right now, however, here is some basic information as to what to look for when you are trying to find the best dehumidifier online. First, make sure that the site you are planning on purchasing your dehumidifier from is a secure and legitimate one. This can usually be discerned by looking at the quality of the site, making sure there is a privacy policy in place and also if the transactions would be considered secure.

Take a look at the information and descriptions that are being provided and then check that information with other sites that you know are accurate. That way you can make sure that the information being given was no hastily slapped together by someone solely in it for the money or that you risk obtaining a low quality dehumidifier from your search to find the best dehumidifier online.

Finally, when it comes to dehumidifiers, like anything, the quality can vary. If you are looking to fix a small dampness problem in a small room, then the cheapest item you can find will probably do the trick. However, taking into account the variables such as room size and amount of humidity you would have to deal with are important to look at to determine what kind of dehumidifier would be the best for you.

For now, take this information in and be sure to do your research on dehumidifiers. It will help you in the long run when you are trying to find the best dehumidifier online

Evaporative Cooling - What Are the Benefits?

I've been asked this question many times over the years and even with the increasing efficiency of forced air conditioning units I can still come up with several reasons why evaporation cooling is still a useful and beneficial cooling option, especially in the Southwest.

First and foremost is the initial installation cost. Rooftop and split system air conditioning units are subject to a government mandated efficiency minimum that has forced air conditioning manufacturers to upgrade to more expensive refrigerants, components, and cabinet sizes. This drives the cost of air conditioning units higher and higher. Meanwhile, evaporative cooling unit costs have stayed fairly low. A typical rooftop air conditioner can cost more than $6000 to have installed on a 2000 square foot house. An evaporative cooler for the same size house can be installed for as little as $1500. Even less if you are able to do it yourself.

Second, evaporative cooling is a green technology. Evap coolers use up to 90% less electricity than air conditioning units. They also do not use chemical refrigerants that have been linked to upper atmosphere ozone depletion. Coolers only use water and air.

Another nice benefit of evaporative cooling, which is actually subject to preference, is the addition of moisture to the conditioned air. The moist air can feel very comfortable, especially in dry climates like the Southwest United States. Air conditioning actually removes moisture in the air as it cools it, leaving the conditioned air very dry.

I'm not a big math person so I'll keep the next part as simple as I can.

While the operating costs associated with air conditioning have dropped dramatically over the last ten years, evaporative coolers still have them beat hands down. A standard residential evaporative cooler on a 2000 square foot home, operating on 230 volts pulls about 6.8 amps which equals 1.564 kilowatts. If your cooler ran for 10 continuous hours at an average rate of 11 cents per KwH it would cost $1.72 per 10 hours.

A 5 ton, 13 seer package heat pump A/C unit on the same 2000 square foot home pulls about 32.7 amps at 230 volts for a total of 7.521 kilowatts. 10 hours at 11 cents per KwH would be $8.27 per 10 hours.

What that boils down to is that even a high efficiency A/C unit costs 4.8 times more to run then a similar sized evaporative cooler!

So, is it worth it to have a new evaporative cooler installed or to fix up the existing one? Absolutely! It's all in the numbers.

Real Estate Pricing - How to Price Right in the Current Market

Realtor has priced your home right? Is a frequent question I hear from frustrated home sellers who are trying to understand why their home has not sold. I understand their frustration and so I suggest that they ask their agent if they have followed the below best practices:

1) With the ever changing market, especially in a declining market, have they shown you neighborhood sales that closed within the last 3-6? If no recent sales have occurred in your neighborhood then you must find the closest neighborhood that is similar to yours and in the same school district. Older sales are not an accurate indicator of market value today.

2) Do the comparable sales you are using have the same number of bedrooms and bathrooms as your home? And are they generally on the same floor. If the master is on the main floor it may be more or less appealing depending on your area and the individual buyer.

3) Have you seen photographs of the homes you are comparing your property to? If the comparable homes are completely renovated and updated homes then your need to account for the the price difference of the renovation.

4) How long have the homes in your neighborhood been taking to sell? Look at how many price reductions occurred before homes have been selling? Ask your agent for the original price and have them look at how many price changes occurred prior to the sale of the comps.

Homegain conducted a survey that shows that many homeowners think their homes should be listed 10 to 20 percent higher than what their Realtors recommend. Nearly 20 percent of homeowners think that their homes are worth 20 percent higher than their Realtors' recommended listing price. A recent Zillow® poll showed that sellers were no longer in denial regarding the U.S. housing slide. The latest HomeGain survey says that that while homeowners may be aware of falling home prices around the country, many believe that the slide does not apply to their homes.

Remember that a house is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it in the open market regardless of what the tax records state. Before making capital improvements, If you need assistance or guidance with real estate in Cincinnati I advise that you contact me, on another agent, to find out what the homes are selling for in your area to be sure that you are not over improving your home. You don't want to be the most expensive house on the block.

Real Estate Social Networking - 3 Questions to Answer Before Joining

By Jamey Bridges

There are many different social networks available today. You can join social networks for a particular interest or join a larger community and find groups that you can connect with. When you are considering adding social networking as part of your online real estate marketing it is important to take time to determine which network will be the best fit for you.

The number of options and flexibility with the different social networks means they can be very powerful tools, but that can also lead to the tough question of "where do I start?" Before you jump in and start filling out new profiles on the different networks it is important to take into consideration what type of network will give you the most for your time investment.

I invite you to consider the following before you start with your real estate social networking efforts:

  1. Where are your friends and associates currently? - You may already have friends and co-workers on some of the major networks. If you already have heard that a number of people you know are on a network, you might want to join that one first. Joining a social network where you already know many people will help you start with a good foundation and help you to get results quickly.
  2. Do you want a social network, business network, or a mix of both? - Some networks are more social than others. Other social networks lend themselves to almost pure business (i.e. LinkedIn) while others provide a mix of business and professional. Evaluate the different networks to find one that works best for your personality so you can take advantage of every feature possible.
  3. How fast is the network growing? - Some networks are still experiencing explosive growth while others are experiencing plateaus. Joining a network that still is growing quickly can give you the opportunity to become a hub of information while new people continue to join the conversation.

There are many different social networks available to the real estate professional. Whether you join popular large networks like Facebook and LinkedIn, or even a real estate specific network like ActiveRain, it is important to have a plan of action when you join. Take time to set goals every day for your real estate social networking activities and you will be able to start closing business from the moment you join a new network.

Why Egyptian Cotton Is Still King

Egyptian cotton has become wildly popular for bedding in recent years. Why exactly? Does it really matter?

It was thought for ages that cotton was cotton and thread count was king when choosing quality sheets. That is no longer true. Consumer guidelines for buying bedding suggest that cotton from Egypt is superior to other cotton. Is this true and, if so, what is the big difference?

Egyptian cottons are used to create bedding of all types from sheets to pillowcases to comforters. The long staple or long fiber of Egyptian-grown cotton means that there is more continuous fiber to use when creating threads or yarns. This yarn is smaller in diameter yet stronger than other cottons. Smaller yarn means that more threads per square inch can be use to create stronger fabric which is light in weight yet breathes well.

More threads per inch mean that the thread count on the bedding label will be higher. Many buyers think that choosing high thread count sheets is the only gauge of quality. This is not true, but in the case of cotton grown in Egypt, the higher thread count means the fabric will be incredibly strong and will last for years and years. If cared for properly, Egyptian produced cotton fabric used for creating bedding products can last for decades.

The hand or feel of the sheets created from Egyptian grown cotton is a bit harder than other cottons when the bedding is new. However, with every single laundering, the cotton sheets from Egyptian fibers become softer and softer. Like a fine wine, age improves the Egyptian fiber cotton bedding and, unlike many products, you will prize your Egyptian fiber sheets of cotton more and more as they age and become soft and cuddly.

Cotton grown in the Egyptian fields will also produce less lint and therefore will not pill after repeated washings as some materials may do. At one time, the only way to obtain Egyptian fiber cotton sheets was to shop in high-end expensive stores. This is no longer true and most department stores and online bedding stores carry a selection of Egyptian produced cotton sheets and other bedding items for the buyer seeking this quality product.

King Cotton was once the name for the cotton grown in the Deep South of the United States. This cotton has much shorter fibers or staple than the Egyptian produced cotton. Egyptian fiber is now considered the king of all cottons for its durability and luxurious feel. After all, we spend almost one-third of our lives in our beds and our bedding should be comfortable and durable. Choosing the right sheets made from the king of cotton, Egyptian produced fibers, you will experience a bed that is comfortable and cozy.

A word of caution regarding bedding labels: if the package says "cotton rich" the actual amount of cotton, whether Egyptian or other cotton, is not stated and can be a very small amount. It is better to select products that state 100% cotton or, if choosing a blend fabric, that clearly state the exact proportion of cotton in the bedding. This will ensure your product composition is one that you will be pleased with.

If the package says "percale", this means that the thread count is at least 180 count. Many people believe that percale is a fabric type in its own right. This isn't the case at all; it simply means the thread count is 180 or more. Percale can be 100% cotton or a blend of cotton and other fibers!

Sferra Brothers always has a special eye for quality and their Celeste linens in 100% cotton from Egypt is no exception. These mix and match fine quality linens are created with 406 thread count. The linens are cool and crisp yet soft for luxurious comfort. White plus 10 solid colors are available. You simply can't go wrong with these machine washable luxury linens.

Matouk Classics collection includes the Lowell design. These Egyptian long fiber cotton sheets are 600 thread count for true luxury. Available in white with one inch sateen tape accents around edges of pillow cases and on sheet hem. Select choice of five solid colors for the accent. These linens are elegant enough for the finest bedrooms.

Frette's 600 thread count Royalty sheet sets come in a shade called "money green" which is actually a deep olive green. Other colors are also available. The linens are accented with a square jacquard weave around the edges for a very distinctive, classic look. If you want beauty beyond compare, these linens from Frette are for you.

Egyptian remains King of the cotton world today and will retain that crown for many years into the future.

You'll find this long staple cotton used in sheets by many different designers and can enjoy this Egyptian luxury, suitable for the kings and pharaohs in your very own home!

Choosing an Adirondack Chair Style

Adirondack chairs offer the ultimate in comfort for backyard living areas.  The rustic Americana-feel combined with the relaxed seating style offer elegance and comfort that you will enjoy for decades.  But choosing among the many styles can be a daunting task.  Here are some basic considerations to make when choosing your patio set.

First, you should decide which type of wood (or polywood) you would like.  Traditional Adirondack chairs come in pine or white cedar, but are readily available in red cedar (for the western feel), teak, oak, and other woods.  Cedar is generally a great choice for outdoor wear.  Pine will work fine as well, though you won't get the same wear out of it.  Consider that a well-sealed cedar chair should last for many decades, whereas a well-sealed pine chair will last for about 10 to fifteen years depending on conditions.

Polywood is new to the outdoor furniture market in the last few years.  It is very durable, but also requires regular cleaning.  Although it doesn't have the feel of real wood it looks the part from far away.  If you want the natural greying process that happens with wood, then stay away from polywood.

Next, you should consider style.  A traditional style Adirondack chair has a flat slats in the back (generally between 5-7 boards), a flat front, and no fancy scroll work.  A more contemporary version of the chair is the comfort style (also known as contoured) chair which has a fan back that curves through the shoulders for comfort.  This style usually has a rounded front as well.  A western-influenced addition is the scrolled fronts and backs.

Both flat-back and comfort-back styles are beautiful.  The comfort-back style tends to be more comfortable, as the name implies.  Expect to pay more for this style however.  Regardless of which style you choose, you won't be disappointed with your choice of an Adirondack chair or rocker.

How to Choose a Real Estate Website Vendor

By Jamey Bridges

One of the most powerful tools for your online real estate marketing is that of a website. With a website you have a great deal of control on the look and feel, content, and page layouts. Building up a powerful real estate website takes time and money. Most real estate agents stay with the same website vendor for years because it can be challenging to move all of the content you have created. Since you are going to be investing time, money, and it is challenging to move should your needs change, it's important to take some time before committing to a specific vendor.

Every real estate agent has different needs and choosing the right company to help you with your website will take a combination of understanding your needs and what will give you the most success online. Here are some key features to consider before you make a switch or sign up with a new company.

  1. What kind of support is offered? - Technical support can vary wildly between companies. Take time to evaluate the operating hours to see if it will work within your schedule. If you only have time to work on your website in the evenings, then you may want to consider a company who has technical support open past 5pm. When you call the companies ask if you can speak to one of their tech support representatives and ask them questions you have had before to see how they would help you.
  2. How often are they updating their product? - Web technologies change and they change quickly. Ask them about how they update their product to maintain their competitive edge online. Some website vendors out there have been using outdated technology and only the real estate agents have suffered. Dig deeper and find out what new features they will be adding over the coming year so you can see who has their eyes on the changing marketplace.
  3. What is the startup program and costs? - The first few weeks of having your new website can make a huge impact on your long term success. When you consider that you will have this website for years it's important to start off with a training program that will set you in the right direction. Find out if they give you someone to help you create your basic pages to start off and ask if there are any online tutorials that you can follow.

There are many different great real estate website vendors out there. Each one offers something unique and the real key is to find one that you feel comfortable you can work with and who will provide a good foundation for you to succeed with online.

No matter whom you choose your ultimate success will be determined by the plan of action you put in place to increase your rankings, get more traffic, get leads, and convert those leads into business. After getting down to your final selection take time to plan how you will be updating your website each and every month as that will help you generate business each and every month.

Co-branding For Luxury Real Estate Marketing Professionals - It is a Win-Win Proposition

By Ron Seigel and Alexandra Seigel

Co-branding is a marketing arrangement between one or more brands that is underutilized by luxury real estate marketing professionals. The idea is to act in cooperation with other luxury professionals and companies in a way that combines the strength of the brands. It is also a way to differentiate products and services in a highly competitive marketplace.

For example, a lender who is interested in paying for a portion of an ad that you want to place in a luxury real estate magazine such as Unique Homes Magazine is co-branding. If, you both send out reprints of the ad to your prospective clients you both expand your marketing reach.

The luxury resort hotel industry has basically the same amenities for guests. There are bathrobes in the room, spa services, great linens, Wi-Fi access, helpful cheerful staff, etc. There is very little difference between the top brands in the luxury resort business in terms of accommodations and services. An example of co-branding is the Ritz Carlton offering guests Frette brand linens. Frette is considered one of the world's finest luxury bed and bath brands.

Fairmont Hotels and Resorts and Lexus have teamed up to provide Fairmont President's Club members (their loyalty program) access to the Lexus hybrid vehicles as hotel courtesy cars to transport guests around the town. They are first to market with this idea. Subliminally, the message is, "we care about our returning customers and we care about the environment. That is why we offer Lexus hybrid cars for your convenience". Lexus considers this is a great way to promote their product to the right demographic.

For both companies, it is a win-win situation. Both show their commitment to the environment which helps grow and retain their clientele. It is co-promotion at its best. It combines the strength of their marketing dollars, and their brand names. It potentially can increase each company's market share.

In what ways can you co-brand with luxury services and products to get similar results in your luxury real estate marketplace?

The Future of Backpacking is Flashpacking

Somewhere before my bus broke down in Australia, I was called a flashpacker. Despite traveling for 18 months, it was the first time I'd heard the term. A flashpacker is defined as someone, unusually in their mid 20s to early 30s, who travels like a backpacker but has more disposal income as well as electronics such as a camera or laptop. Flashpackers also expect better hostels and services.

Neither fully backpacker nor tourist, flashpackers are new to the traveling vocabulary. Flashpackers sleep in hostels, use a backpack, and want cheap transportation but blow their wad on meals, beer, tours, and parties. They usually aren't walking into a hostel randomly or wearing the same shirt for a week. Many hostels are up scaling to accommodate the increasing wants and desires of flashpackers and you'll find these hostels in all corners of the earth. Flashpackers still have no fixed journey and all the time to roam around but don't pinch every penny. They are backpackers with means.

Backpacking is not about a look, it's a lifestyle. Just because a person doesn't have a certain style, doesn't mean they lack the character of a backpacker. It doesn't make them less of a backpacker. It goes against the backpacker mentality to look down on someone because they travel differently. Aren't we supposed to be embracing different ways of life?

It all comes down to what makes a backpacker a backpacker. That's spirit. The desire to explore new places and experience new people. Backpacking is about opening your mind to new things and looking differently at the world. It's not about the stuff you carry. As your spirit is the same, what stuff you carry shouldn't matter.

We're all flashpackers, whether you like it or not. We may not be driving up to the hostel in a limo but we all expect a little "flash" nowadays. According to a Hostelworld study in 2006, 21 percent of people travel with a laptop, 54 percent with an MP3 player, 83 percent with a mobile phone and a whopping 86 percent travel with a digital camera.

Think about your last holiday- how many travelers did you see with cameras? iPods? Laptops? I can't remember seeing one person without a camera, and at least 3/4 of the people I saw had iPods.

The truth is we all travel with costly electronics now. We check our email and Skype our friends. We all have a camera and most of us have an iPod. We are flashpackers and it's not a bad thing. All these electronics allows us to stay better connected with our friends, our family, and helps us better document our travels. The key is to once in awhile to put down the camera, turn off the computer, and enjoy the culture you came to see.

The backpacker who set off with 1 shirt, a small pack, and two baht to his name is getting hard to find. Many of us have a little more money and want a little more but we still carry the backpacker spirit. We still seek new cultures, exotic locales, and long term travel. We still look for cheap hostels and transport. We camp on that jungle trek. The divergence is that now we also want a place to plug in our camera, check our e-mail, and take a hot shower. We just want to be pampered...once in awhile.

Matthew Kepnes is a lifelong backpacker and recent flashpacker who has spent many years traveling around the world. Visit his website about how to travel the world and learn more about how to be a flashpacker

Growing Television Market in India

By Pradeep Thanvi

On the brick of rapid economic growth, India has witnessed the dynamic change in country's consumer electronics industry. In last few years the industry has been witnessing significant changes in retail boom, growing disposable income and availability of easy finance schemes. One electronic gadget that has brought new revolution in Indian Electronic Industry is Television Set. Today, India is fast emerging as the key driver in the global television market both as a manufacturer and consumer.

In recent years, the market for televisions in India has changed rapidly from the conventional CRT technology to Flat Panel Display Televisions (FPTV). Currently, the split between CRT and FPTV is around 97% and 3% respectively. In addition to this, one of the most striking changes sweeping across the colour television market in Indian market is the exponential growth of the flat panel television (FPTV) market, in common parlance called the liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma televisions . Moreover, as per recent research data available, the global market for FPTV is expected to grow from 51 million units in 2006 to 127 million by 2009.

Looking at the present scenario, over the last couple of years, the LCD prices have even dropped by around 30 per cent annually. Some of the important factors that boasted this growth also include the increasing awareness of the advantages of LCD televisions, the growing availability of the product across dealer counters and the finance schemes in the market.

Besides this, as a manufacturing hub, the television industry is improving more and more. There are many domestic and MNC companies that have increased their production bases in the country. Easy availability of low-cost skilled labor and the emergence of SEZs, which are tax-free zones are some of the key factors that have resulted in growth of these manufacturing units. In fact, encouraged by tax-breaks, new manufacturing units are coming up in less-developed regions now. Today, India is one of the few emerging countries to have an excellent component supply base in terms of manufacturing facilities for glass and color picture tubes, so it helps it a good choice for all those companies who are looking to take benefit of this emerging market.

How to Access a Beautiful Community, Vibrant Life and Town by Buying a Condo

If you have ever taken a stroll during a nice summer evening then you are well aware of the small town euphoria which overtakes you.  Some smaller towns offers more bang for the buck than many bigger cities and towns which I have visited over the years.  I guess that is why many first-time homebuyers tend to want to gain access to many of the communities. In this article I will go over how you can claim your little slice of heaven by buying a condo at bargain prices.

If you are considering purchasing a single-family home you may be in for a rude awakening. The average price of a single-family home is a tad bit under three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Now I happen to personally know that kind of price tag is out of reach for most first-time home buyers so do not feel bad if you fall into this category. However the price tag for a condo is right at two hundred thousand dollars, which is much more attainable for a young family just starting out.

The first step you should take when you start out shopping for a condo is to go online and search for "Condo Guide." This guide will give you all of the details about every condo community in your local area. This guide is priceless when shopping for your condo. You will learn price ranges, details about the communities and little known facts you would not have known otherwise.

The second step you should take is to gather as much information as possible about the extra fees that each condo community charges, such as insurance, maintenance fees and anything else. This is a crucial step because you could end up with a mortgage payment that is several hundred dollars than you originally anticipated.

All in all, buying a condo is the best option for a young family to be a part of a great community with excellent schools and a thriving social scene. Just be sure that when you are buying a condo, that you keep in mind all costs such as condo association fees. There may also be some additional duties you can reasonably expect your association to take care of on your behalf. For example if you really want to paint your house a bright orange neon color then be aware that no association will do that for you or even allow you to do that. However, if you are trying to find a way to wiggle out of shoveling snow in the winter then you can pretty much take your pick of the litter.

Magnificent Force of a Smile in Business

By Anandrahi JS

Your Biggest Asset

One of the five richest persons of the world in last two hundred years steel king Andrew Carnegie knew the magnificent power of smile in business. He was aware of the fact that he wouldn't be able to get big success till he had the most attractive smile in his favour. He started his hunt for the marketing man having a smile that could move the world. He found Charles Schwab who became the most successful marketing executive this world ever had. Every business guru of that time agreed that two characteristics of Charles Schwab, his smile and his power of polite convincing, helped Andrew to make his billions. And by helping Andrew Carnegie Charles Schwab himself became a billionaire.

Breaks the Barrier

A smile attracts customers because it not only breaks the barriers between the two persons but also projects the confidence of a salesman in himself and his products. In numerous surveys it has been found that humorous nature is one of the top five qualities of men which attract others. It is very difficult for a person to get many friends if he is unable to smile.

Smooth Swimming

A businessman who has a smile and a quality product on his side can be a tough competitor whom no one can defeat. Smile is your most effective business tool. You can sell anything through it. Some businessmen may say 'how can we smile when we are bitter inside - facing innumerable hardships and cut-throat competition everyday. But they forget that it is the smile that is capable of soothing their nerves and energising their minds and helps them swim through the tides of business world smoothly. Smile more often. If you can't smile from heart, smile from face. Act smiling. Smiling will soon become your habit.

People Run Away from an Angryman

American Billionaire Henry J. Kaiser - the son of a shoe factory mechanic raised himself from a poor man to very rich industrialist due to the strength of his infectious smile and determination. His life was so full of miseries and hardships that he had often to force himself to smile. Charged with enthusiasm based on smile he always got success in winning new business territories and customers. Keep this fact of human tendency in mind that most of the people and customers shun away a touchy egotist or an angry sales man/girl. They always welcome a smiling seller or trader.

In brief you must learn to smile to succeed in any venture related to public relations and your smile should be as genuine as your product. In case you are not at all interested in smiling then hire smiling faces and surround yourself with them. And a smile is always more effective when served with politeness.

Tips in Buying Toolboxes

By David Urmann

Working tools are so plenty varied that one often finds it difficult to organize them. They sometimes also easily get lost or misplaced. Toolboxes solve this problem. These are storage devices that hold all tools in one container. There are many types of toolboxes. It varies in materials used, its main functionality, size and design.

The metal toolboxes are either made of aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum toolboxes are commonly for pickup truck beds. Stainless steel toolboxes are lighter, durable and more portable. It is also rust resistant. They are for race environments, residential garages and commercial garages.

Plastic toolboxes are known to be light weight, handy and durable. These toolboxes are clear break resistant and rust resistant. They are non corrosive and can be easily cleaned with soap and water. Some of these kinds are wall mounted types.

Get a toolbox big enough to accommodate all your tools. Compact sizes are preferred to save space, but you might also consider a bigger container if necessary. Gather all the tools you want to store in one box together, and gauge the size of the toolbox you intend to get.

Also consider the number of dividers inside. The interior is important in keeping more organized your tools. It is better to have unequal divisions. The smaller portions can be used to store small items like nails and screws. There can be a lengthwise division for elongated tools like screwdrivers and portable hammers.

Check the durability of the locks. It will keep your tools secured from theft. Also check where the door opens. Top opens are good for residential use. Side opens are used mostly in vehicles like trucks. Some toolboxes use the combination lock. A series of numbers must be aligned for the box to open. Others use the traditional padlock and key. The disadvantage of this is that most keys easily get misplaced.

Your toolbox must be break resistant if it is plastic. If it is metal, it should be compact and easy to carry around. Some are made of wood also. With the many types of wood around, choose one that is very durable and does not easily chip off.

The functionality of the toolbox is also of utmost importance. Toolboxes are greatly varied, depending on where it will be placed, and where it will be used mainly. There are toolboxes that look like kits with handles. These are all-around toolboxes that can be used at home. It is easy to lug around inside the house, out in the garden or garage.

Some toolboxes are customized for vehicles. Car toolboxes have shapes that take the form of the compartments at the back. This way it is more space saving, such that it leaves big room for other items to be stored in the compartment.

Truck toolboxes are more bulky and can store more hand tools. Most of these are designed to be installed at the back of the truck, in truck beds when there is one. At other times, it can be installed behind the wheel, or under the seat of the driver. Some truck toolboxes can also be fixated in walls or floors of the truck bed for added security.

Join the Green Movement by Building Eco Friendly Homes

By Katrina Fillmore

Going green is the best route to take today. With the environment getting much attention these days, there's no way to go but go green. Thanks to concerned non-profit international organizations that strongly advocate the preservation of the ecosystem, many people are now made aware of their responsibilities for saving our Mother Earth.

It's great to know that various segments of society are indeed exerting efforts to use and recycle environment friendly materials. Homeowners are recycling wastes, companies are using recycled products to promote their businesses, car owners are making biofuel to run their vehicles and automakers are making electric cars and other eco friendly vehicles. The construction sector has joined in and several companies such as Mountain Creation in Pennsylvania are building wood cabins and log homes for people who want to go totally green to save the Earth.

Eco friendly wood homes compared to the regular homes have little impact on the environment and humans as well. They are constructed in such a way that they use energy, water and other resources in a very efficient manner thereby reducing waste and pollution and protecting the health of occupants. In other words, their overall design, operation, maintenance and construction support the green building process.

Green building promotes the use of environment friendly resources in constructing residential structures considered to be an affordable approach for both home builders and homeowners. In the United States, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) leads in setting the standards for designing, constructing and operating eco friendly buildings. The council is, in fact, responsible for creating the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or what is popularly known as the LEED rating system.

In building homes, using wood and logs is not only practical but is also beneficial to the environment. Most logs such as those from cedar can be obtained from natural resources. They are renewable resources in that they can be replanted again and again after being cut for use in building homes. These trees can be found locally and need not be transported from other states resulting in lower costs.

Apart from their renewable properties, wood can also be recycled. Unused logs can be used again to build other homes or used as firewood. Since nothing is wasted, the environment benefits a lot from them.

A big advantage of wood homes and log cabins is that they don't pose any health hazard to occupants. This is because wood used for construction are very natural. They do not need any kind of processing with the use of harmful chemicals.

Still another benefit is the big savings homeowners of eco friendly homes can gain. They can save a lot on their energy, heating as well as cooling bills. The reason behind this is that wood homes provide a family's much desired comfort all year round regardless of the weather outside. Wood is capable of absorbing heat during the summer and releasing heat during the winter season.

Keep in mind that a beautiful home does not necessarily have to be made from concrete. A wood home or log cabin can be anybody's dream house because aside from its natural beauty, the benefits it can give you and your family are incomparable.

Mountain Creations Log Homes, located just north of Pittsburgh, PA, can help you install various green technologies in your log cabin before you start building or after your home is completed. Mountain Creations can help you design your log cabin by incorporating natural sunlight and other energy-efficient design elements into your blueprints.
